21 August 08 - 14:51Bathampton Scouts join Church for BBQ

Taken from Bath Chronicle 17 July 2008

Sausages sizzled and hamburgers were flipped as communities around Bath bonded over a series of barbecues.

Bath's Biggest BBQ was cooked up by churches across the city as a new way of engaging with the community and spreading the word of God through a series of activities.

The event was organised as part of Hope08, a national initiative designed to demonstrate the Christian faith in action and explain its meaning in villages, towns and cities throughout the UK.

Around 60 villagers in Bathampton enjoyed hotdogs, beefburgers and soft drinks in playing fields opposite the village hall.

The event was organised by Bathampton Parish Church and Bathampton Scout Group, and also helped to raise £130 for playground equipment at the village primary school.

The Rev Rob Thomas, who is curate for the parishes of Bathampton and Claverton, said the event was a good chance to get villagers together and also to meet new people.

He said: "It was a chance for people to come together and we just want to do something good for the community and help members of the community get to know each other.

"We had a good crowd on Saturday and sold the beefburgers, with all the proceeds going to the local primary school.

"We want to be a blessing to the community."

Barbecues also took place in Weston, Twerton, Kingsway, at Bath Abbey, St Michael's Church at Broad Street, Larkhall and Bathford.

A spokesman for Hope08 said: "The idea was to raise the profile of the Church in Bath so that the city knows it is involved in the local community.

"Having a barbecue does not pretend to present the whole Gospel truth, it is not pretending to, but it does go to the heart of the believing communities."
