    12 June 06 - 18:46Combe Down Scouts Revamp HQ

Work started this week on a £11,000 project to revamp Combe Down's Scout hut. The building in The Avenue, which provides the headquarters for Combe Down's Explorers, Scouts, Cubs and Beavers, hasn't been touched since it was built 41 years ago. The roof is described as "leaky" and the windows don't have any double glazing, making the building very cold for the children in winter. But now the groups' leaders are planning to carry out a range of works, which are expected to last between six and 12 months. These will include new windows, repairs to the roof, upgrading of the electrics and wiring, improvements to the heating system and to security, upgrading of the kitchen and redecoration. The work has been made possible thanks to a £5,000 grant from the National Lottery, but the group still needs to raise £6,000 more to complete the improvements. James Fishlock, Explorer Scout leader, who is co-ordinating the improvement works, said: "This grant will make a real difference to the Scout Group and all those who use the headquarters. "The headquarters is in use by the Scouts six evenings a week, by the New Avenue Playgroup four days a week, and by other members of the community for parties and other functions. "The works we are planning will improve the safety, security and environment of the hut, which will be good for everyone." Mr Fishlock added: "We are planning several different ways to raise the money including a grand summer draw which we hope will take us towards our target. "There is also the regular jumble sales held at the hut every two months and, of course, direct donations. "The community of Combe Down and surrounding areas have been very supportive of the group, particularly in recent years. "We are sure that over the next 12 months we will be able to reach our target." The top prize in the summer draw will be a framed gold DVD of Top Gun signed by Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise. Anyone wanting to make a donation can contact Mr Fishlock on 01225 830221 or email james@10thbath.org.uk .
