22 March 06 - 12:10Scouts supporting the runners
The Nationwide Bath Half Marathon takes place on Sunday 19th March, starting at Great Pultney Street in Bath. On Saturday 18th March there will be a Family Sports Day on The Recreation Field in Bath. Busy working behind the scenes at both events will be around 30 volunteers from the Scout Movement.
John Fagan, who is co-ordinating the Scouting support of the event, explained "Over the last few years we've increased the number of people we provide to assist with the support of this event. It is important to us to be seen at key events in the city such as the Half Marathon. Many people just don't realise what a thriving movement Scouting is; and being seen supporting an event like this provides us with an opportunity to boost our profile."
The Scouts will be carrying out a range of support roles including, staffing drinks stations for the runners, helping with runner registration, marshalling on route, and assisting at the finishing line.
10,000 runners have registered to take part in the Half Marathon on Sunday 19 March.
Andrew Taylor, Race Director for the event, commented: "We've increased our reliance on the Scouts, and this year will be using more of their volunteers than before. We know we can rely on Scouting to provide the sort of volunteers we need for a project like this."
The 2005 Nationwide Bath Half Marathon raised over £720,000 for local charities, including a staggering £460,000 for the official race charities. This makes the Bath event one of the largest fundraisers in the South West.
In addition to supporting the Half Marathon, the Scouts will also be present at the Family Sports Day on Saturday 18 March. On that day, as well as supporting the event, they also hope to have the opportunity to speak to young people and adults interested in joining the world's largest youth movement.

03 March 06 - 13:53Scouts Learn Fire Safety
In a change from lighting fires, Scouts from the 28th Bathampton Scout Group visited the Bath Fire and Rescue Station, to see how to put them out.
The 14 young people learnt about fire safety in the home, how to use 999, the different types of fire extinguishers and then looked around the fire tenders and watched some of the equipment in use. This had a serious side as it was all aimed at getting their Fire Safety Badge
Simon Crowden Scout Leader said: "The high light of the meeting was using the fire hoses under the supervision of the Firemen, all of us got wet, but we all enjoyed our selves".
Bathampton Scouts are now working on their Guide Award learning about the local community and local landmarks. The Bathampton Scouts future activities include a Winter Olympics evening, a cooking competition and their Christmas Party.

03 March 06 - 13:52Determined Bath Scouts Enjoy Adventurous Weekend
Scouts from the 28th, 31st, 69th enjoyed a weekend of activities at the 3D Adventure Centre, Osmington Bay Weymouth, in wet and cold conditions.
Activities included archery, a beach walk, quad biking, air rifle shooting, a night hike, circus skills, and absailing.
Leader Simon Crowden said "The Scouts had a very enjoyable time despite the rain and as we left the centre the Scouts were planning what they wanted to do next year!"
This is the third year in a row that Bath Scouts have been to the centre "The number of young people joining is on the increase because young people enjoy these and may other types of activities that Scouts can provide" said Simon Crowden.
"As numbers increase we are keen to attract new adults to help in what ever way they can. Scouting is open to anyone, whatever their background, age or other commitments, there is a place for everyone".
